"Well, I'm kind of like Spock... in that episode where he tells the replicants that everything he says is a lie, and they go, 'But if everything you say is a lie, then you're lying now, because you're telling the truth, which means you're lying now', and then the smoke starts to come out of their ears and they malfunction and he gets to escape. See, you just seem a little stiff to me, and I'm trying to make sure you're not a replicant."

"You're weird", she said.
"Yeah, yeah, I am", I said. "But you're finding yourself oddly attracted to me, aren't you?"
She looked at me.
"You have nice teeth", she said. "Nice crooked teeth."
"Thanks."
"You have the strangest energy", she said. I remember that exactly.
"Energy?" I said. "I didn't know we were going to be using words like 'energy'. And when did I put myself up for your judgement?"
"I don't know. You just seem to require a lot of attention."
"I do, huh?"
"Yeah. Are you nervous?"
"No. Why would I be nervous?"
"I don't know."
"Well, I'm not nervous, " I said.
We were silent, both of us watching the band again.
"Okay, yeah", I said. "I'm nervous all the time. I don't know why."
"Me, too, " she said.

I was starting to like her. I began to basically antagonize her. She had gone to Cornell - that was good for a while. She was from Manchester, Connecticut, she read only black women authors, and she'd recently ended a three-year relationship. I was in love.

- The Hottest State, Ethan Hawke

If you don't know this book, go to your local library/ book shop/ second hand book store/ whatever and buy/ borrow it. Heck, you can even have my copy. It's wonderful. A lot more people should read it. Honestly.
