And there I sat, and the muse came and whispered quiet words...

I'm posting my last story. Llanowar insisted. *sighs*

Enjoy.

Calling Sean

„Sean, it’s me.“
„Oh hi. What’s up?“
„Nothing. I just wanted to say ‚hi.‘“
„As usual.“ Sean laughed goodnaturedly.
„Oh, you do know me, right?“
„Yeah, I do.“

They were silent for a minute, and Sean listened to the buzzing accompanying the connection.

„Erm, look, if this isn’t a good time to call...“
„Actually, it is. I was hoping you would call.“
„Really?“
„Yeah.“ He sat down in a chair, getting comfortable, and started to look through some of the papers, which lay on the small table next to him.

„How are you then, Sean?“
„Fine. Fine. Really. Lots of things to do, but today I have a day off. Christine’s shopping and the house’s quiet. What about you?“
„I‘m busy...“
„Busy bee...“ Sean chuckled.
„Yes! Me the busy bee. Right.“
Sean could hear him laugh. But it ended abruptly.
„It’s too quiet. I miss you guys.“
„Well, I miss you too. What about Dom?“
„I miss him most.“
„I know. I know. How long did you two live together?“
„I don’t know. About.... three months, one week, two days?“

They both laughed.

„I miss him badly.“
„Tell him.“
„Nah, I couldn’t, Sean. Besides, he’s in New York right now.“
Sean rolled his eyes.
„Does it matter?“
Sean’s question was followed by silence. A rustling noise told him the caller was still there.

„Oh, fuck.“
„What’s the matter?“ Sean asked concerned. He stopped browsing through the papers.
„I bumped my toe.“
„Poor baby. The couch again?“ He could not help but smile.
„Yup. Damn thing.“
„I thought you wanted to get a new one.“
„Yes, I did. Kept the stupid thing anyway.“
„Why do you have to stand up and walk around anyway?“
„I’m hungry.“

Sean laughed.

„No, I’m really hungry. And I’m going to the kitchen with you.“
„Cable’s long enough?“
„No cable. I bought a cordless phone last week.“
„Wow.“
„No mocking. I’m not in the mood for mocking.“
„Yes you are,“ Sean grinned. He relaxed back into the cushions.
„No, am not.“
„Are.“
„Am not.“
„Are.“

Pt. 2

He listened to the long sigh and grabbed an apple from the tray he had brought in earlier.

„So,“ he said, chewing, „what are you going to eat?“
„Something unhealthy. Stop asking.“
He looked at his apple, considering.
„You should eat some fruit,“ Sean said.
„Yes, Pa.“
„Ha, ha, very funny.“ That was what he intended to say. It sounded more like „ferry fummy.“
„Eating apples again?“
Sean swallowed. Surprised, he raised his eyebrows.
„No,“ he said.
„Aw, come on, I know you, you can’t fool me.“
This time Sean sighed.
„Okay, you got me.“
„Hah!“
„But you wanted to talk about Dom, didn’t you?“
„Yes.“ He sounded so timid, Sean pressed the receiver closer to his ear.

„Do you want me to just listen? Maybe I shouldn’t bother you with all these questions.“
„No. I mean I wanted to talk to you, after all. I would have told you if I just wanted you to listen. I just... I just miss him.“
„Does he know?“
„Sean! Of course he knows!“
„Does he? Are you sure?“
„Stop sounding like a goddamn therapist!“

Sean inhaled sharply.

„Look. Why don’t you call him?“
„Maybe he doesn’t want to talk to me.“
„Don’t be silly,“ Sean said.
„All right. But his work. He’s filming right now.“
„If I remember correctly, so are you. What’s your point? That he doesn’t care enough to have the time for a simple phone call? Come on, you can’t be serious!“ Sean was exasperated by his friend’s words.
„You’re right. I’m not.“
„See?“ He started to reach for another apple but decided otherwise and stopped himself.

„Did you eat something in the meantime?“
„No. I forgot.“ Sean could hear some sullen noises and smiled affectionately.
„You really should eat sometime, you know. You’ll be skin and bones in no time.“
„Says the apple chewing man.“
„An apple a day...“
„Keeps the doctor away. I know that one, Sean.“
„I could visit you...“
„Now you’re being silly.“
„I’m dead serious.“
„No.“ A sigh. „I’m all right. Really. I’m just a coward, but I’ll manage.“
„Call Dom, or I‘ll call him.“ Sean threatened.

Sean listened to the breathing on the other end of the line. He stood up, walked into the kitchen and poured himself a glass of juice.

„Are you gnawing your nails?“ he asked suspiciously.
„No! In fact, I’m eating crackers. Lousy crackers. Miss your cooking.“
„Aw, poor baby. Back to nutritious bachelor meals?“
„Oh, ha ha. I don’t have a lovely wife to take care of me.“
„You could have Dom...“
„He won’t play housewife. I tried to convince him. He scolded me.“

Sean stifled a laugh at the mental picture of Dom wearing an apron.

„Just because he loves you.“
„Oh, most certainly. What’s so funny?“
„Nothing. You know how to cook, right?“ Sean asked.
„What’s your point?“
„Maybe you should play housewife.“
„Ha ha. You’re so funny.“
„No, I’m serious.“

Again, he was answered with silence. He sighed.

„Anything exciting happening right now?“
„I burnt my toast.“
„Silly! I meant in your life! You’re not very... Oh, how should I put this? All the other times you called you were bursting with excitement. You wouldn’t stop rambling about little things for hours!“
„I feel stupid, Sean. Look at me. I have enough work to do. I have a nice flat. A messy, chaotic, nice flat. I’m busy. And yet...“
„You’re sad. Simple as that. Oh wait, I think, Christine’s coming home.“

He walked to the front door, the phone never leaving his ear. She smiled at him when he swung the door open and helped her with her bags. He peeked into one of the paper bags.

„Huh, leek. Eeeek.“
„Fruits and vegetables are healthy, right?“
„Aw, shut up. No, not you honey... it’s... yeah. She sends you love.“
„Woa, thanks. I’m flattered.“
„You should be. Christine? He says ‚hi.‘ Yeah, I love you too, hon.“
„Jeez, if you want some privacy...“
„No! Just wait one more minute.“

He kissed her soundly on the cheek.

„Now you get all the attention you need,“ Sean reassured him.
„I do?“
„Yeah.“
„I knew you loved me.“
„That I do. Are you calling him then, or what?“
„Sean... I don’t know. I just... can’t...“
„He won’t reject you.“
„How do you know that?“
„He loves you. That’s why he went away and did some stuff on his own.“
„He could have taken me with him.“
„You wouldn’t have left, he knew that.“
„I would. If he had asked me.“
„You’d be homesick in no time. Dom knows that. He’s no fool. He knows you in and out.“
„You’re right.“
„I know.“
„So what do I do now?“
„Call him. Jesus Christ. Just call.“

„I will. So, everything fine with you?“
„Yeah, perfect. Couldn’t be better. But I know a change of topic when I hear one. So you will call him then?“
„Yesssss. All right? I‘ll call him!“
„When?“
„Tomorrow.“
„Not good enough for me.“
„Aw, Sean!“
„Call him!“
„You’re on the phone right now, remember?“
„Call him now. You can call me back anytime.“
„I’ll just wake up Christine then.“
„Well, maybe you will. Gotta take the risk. Besides, the phone is next to my bedside.“
„You really do love me, don’t you?“
„Of course I do. Now be a good boy and hang up, okay?“
„All right. Thank you, Sean.“
„You’re welcome, Billy. You’re welcome.“

He listened to the soft click, then to the dial tone as the connection was closed, and smiled.

I think you know what I mean *giggle*

Actually, when Sean, Billy and Christine talk, you never hear a single word uttered by Christine. It's still only Billy and Sean talking. Remember, it's two persons chatting over the phone. Christine arrives at her and Sean's place, and Sean talks to her. She and Billy never talk directly to each other, so Sean has to exchange greeting for them ;)

Oh, and posting a question or feedback won't make me sad, silly. :) I love feedback!
And I don't like you less for posting this. :)
